  An Evening with Eimear Quinn and the Dublin Laptop Orchestra
  
  Eimear Quinn's haunting, ethereal sound won the hearts of millions with her 1996 Eurovision Song Contest winning performance of Brendan Graham's 'The Voice'. As a best-selling recording artist and performer, her highly distinctive sound and her interpretations inspire. In this her first collaboration with the RTÉ NSO, she will embrace a span of repertoire ranging from the Irish tradition to the contemporary.
  
  This unique evening includes the fragile beauty of Thomas Moore's Silent o Moyle, Sean O'Riada's Mná na hÉireann, Brendan Graham's haunting Cruchán na bPáiste and Eimear's own setting of In Paradisum. With the innovative Dublin Laptop Orchestra - who "make music with lots of laptops, hands, golf controllers, a wireless router, and anyone that plays.. anything" and who aims "to bring some theatricality and 'physical presence' into electronic music performance" with a focus on folk music - she will perform the world premiere of Emma O'Halloran's Whisper City, 'taking inspiration from the American podcast show www.whispercities.org and exploring the 'secret music' of Dublin streets.
  
  Orchestral works include the power and poetry of Aloys Fleischmann'S Na Ceithre Máistirí (Réamhcheol) and Séan Ó Riada stirring Olynthiac Overture, The Banks of Sulan, Seoladh na nGamhan (The Herding of the Calves) and the world premiere of Alex Dowling's Very Pointy, featuring the Dublin Laptop Orchestra.

  SCI-LENS is to tradition what silence is to sound.
  
  Featuring a world leader in the field of computer music, a laptop orchestra and the nine exceptional musicians of the Yurodny Ensemble, SCI-LENS involves the design and building of new gestural interfaces; physical and virtual electronics for the translation of traditional music from around the world into contemporary language and an exploration of the current meaning of sound in space.
  
  SCI-LENS is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland Project Awards 2011 in association with the UCD Imagine Science and Film Festival, Imagine Science NYC and Diatribe Records, Dublin.

  New music::new Ireland Salon

  
  The Contemporary Music Centre has joined forces with the Dublin Laptop Orchestra for its next new music::new Ireland salon, which takes place 6pm – 7pm, Wednesday, 30 May 2012, National Concert Hall. The Dublin Laptop Orchestra will present 4 works by members David Collier, Saramai Leech, Rachel Ní Chuinn, Jenn Kirby.
  
  This will be the premiere for Saramai Leech’s Playroom and Rachel Ní Chuinn’s Quatrain. Quatrain is inspired by Samuel Beckett's work Quad. Jenn Kirby’s Two Point Oh was premiered earlier this year at the CMC Student New Music Marathon, held in the DIT, March 2012. David Collier’s Smacht was previously performed at Smock Alley Theatre with musicians from This Is How We Fly.

  Free State is Crash Ensemble’s annual concert of up-and-coming composers. Selecting the most vibrant new music Ireland has to offer from over 100 open-submission entries, Free State 7 introduces you to the talented new names to watch out for.
  
  Since Free State’s inception in 2006 Crash Ensemble have showcased works from composers who have gone on to become leading lights of the Irish New Music scene: among them, Ed Bennett, Linda Buckley, Julie Feeney, Garrett Sholdice, and Andrew Hamilton.

  DubLork performing at the Contemporary Music Centre New Music Marathon in DIT

  
  
  The annual event of new music by student composers and performers takes place in the theatre of the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Rathmines, Dublin 6, from 10:30am – 6:30pm, on Friday 9 March 2012.
  
  An eclectic mix of new instrumental, electroacoustic/acousmatic, mixed-media and live electronic pieces will feature in several concerts programmed throughout the day. The concerts are programmed by Glen Austin, composer and PhD candidate at DIT and Dr Kerry Houston, Head of Department of Academic Studies, DIT, and will feature composition and performance students from, among others, the University of Ulster, Magee (Derry); Trinity College Dublin (TCD); NUI Maynooth; University of Limerick (UL); and the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. A panel discussion on developing relationships between composers and performers will also take place as part of the day.

  In collaboration with some of the most exciting musicians in traditional Irish music, the Dublin Laptop Orchestra are delighted to present a unique concert of new music at Smock Alley Theatre. The concert will feature a series of completely new pieces that combine Irish traditional music with live electronics. Laptops will be used to create complex rhythms and virtual droning fiddle strings, controllers will manipulate sound and allow it to blend with musicians in real-time, and the sounds of the performers themselves will even be used as raw material for completely improvised creations. This collaboration aims to infuse Irish traditional music with some of the potential that moderntechnology offers. Definitely not to be missed!

  Sligo Live Sessions is a national festival celebrating traditional, roots and acoustic music. Now in its sixth year, it has carved out a niche as one of the most relaxed, intimate and enjoyable music festivals in Ireland. Sligo Live Sessions is a modern continuation of a long and distinguished musical heritage going back hundreds and maybe thousands of years. It has been shown that the first inhabitants came to Sligo over five thousand years ago and who would bet that the incredable beauty of Sligo did not inspire them to sing, dance and play music! As another famous Sligoman, W.B.Yeats said in his poem 'The Fiddler of Dooney' "The merry love to fiddle and the merry love to dance"

  Sound is a physical thing and it touches you softly. Lie on your back, close your eyes and open your ears. You are at the centre of an orbiting planet, twisting, churning and grinding through life as we know it. Things are falling from outer space and somewhere a witch doctor is exorcising begrudgery and cynicism. Get your bearings, you'll have to learn the beat as we step on the accelerator and take you for a ride.
  
  Take the snoring out of lying down and join us in this interactive musical experience.
